Live Events and Video Showcases

Thandiwe creates inspiring experiences that highlight the work of community artists and neighborhood leaders while exploring artistic practices and the creative process. The events are typically presented in partnership with arts organizations, community centers, colleges and universities, churches, and retreat centers.

  • Visual Arts

Attendings is a lecture presentation that features a collaboratively-created video by Thandiwe Shiphrah and Daniel Arite. The presentation speaks to the ways in which the two artists turn to nature to nourish their inner life, stay grounded in their artmaking, and connected to their culture and community. Reflections and original music celebrate a 2019 harvest-themed youth mural project that continues to fuel their imaginations and their mentoring of an emerging vocalist. The artists share some of their inspirations in a backyard installation – assemblages made of everyday objects combined with flowers and plants – that emerged from Daniel's love of gardening and Thandiwe's passion for poetic imagery.

  • Writing

Imagination, Praise, and Remembrance is a series of creativity workshops for adults 55 and older that draw on memory and focus on writing with humor and from the heart. Wordplay, free writing, prompts, and timed exercises will be used to generate stories and poems that celebrate our gifts and talents and honor the people, places, and treasured events of our lives. As we delve into the craft of writing, we will study the work of contemporary authors and explore a variety of forms and techniques for expressing ideas, observations and insights. Tips and resources for carving out time and space for a regular writing practice will also be discussed. No previous writing experience required.

  • Creative Reuse

The Return to Wonderment Workshop is a jazz-infused creativity session that uses poems, songs, and other texts to facilitate deep reflection on one's personal calling in relationship to the broader effort to restore and protect the planet. Participants have ample opportunity to write and converse with each other about creative ways to reduce consumption, recycle, and reuse products and materials. The two-hour session culminates in the creation of a collaborative poem that incorporates insights generated during the workshop.
